What Is a Foosball Table? The Complete Guide

Foosball is a table-based sport in which players control rows of miniature figures mounted on rotating rods to strike a ball into the opposing goal. It is played on a rectangular table, typically by two or four players, across eight rods.
It is also called table football, table soccer, baby foot, kicker, calcio balilla, or futbolin. The object is the same everywhere.
How a Foosball Table Works
Each rod controls a row of figures: goalkeeper, defenders, midfielders, and forwards. Players grip the handles, rotating and sliding them to position and strike the ball. A goal is scored when the ball fully crosses the goal line.
Matches are typically played to five or ten goals. At ITSF level the matches follow a structured format with best-of sets, serve rules, and defined time limits.
Why People Still Play It
Table football requires no scheduling, no kit, and no fitness baseline. Two strangers can play within thirty seconds of meeting. It has survived in bars, offices, hotel lobbies, and family homes for over a hundred years for one reason: it works.
